The department of Knowledge and Information Science (previously known as Library and Information Science) of the Persian Gulf University in Bushehr, Iran was founded in 1995. The department originally started its educational and research activities with two faculty members by offering a two year undergraduate degree program from 1995 to 2008 and extended to a four year Bachelor degree program with four faculty members from 2009 onwards. About 850 students graduated during the academic years of 1995-2020.
In the year 2012, based on the consensus of the members of the Library and Information Science Planning Committee, Ministry of Science, Research and Technology led by Professor Jafar Mehrad, the name of the program changed from Library and Information Science to Knowledge and Information science. From this year, the department continued all its activities under the new name.
Currently, the department of Knowledge and Information Science consists of five active faculty members and 140 undergraduate students. The department is managed by Mrs. Soheila alavi from 1995 until now. Besides educational activities, the members of the department are actively participating in research activities such as organizing scientific projects, workshops, talks, webinars, etc. at the national and international levels. The department is equipped with an Information Organization lab and has access to IT facilities (computer and internet) at the faculty. Recently, two research teams entitled Quantitative Studies of Science and Technology and Social Media Data Studies have been established within the department.
